Product Description

Choose one of our full size Black Cleft Slate Facing set for a professional designer look for your fireplace; an affordable alternative to inexpensive tile surrounds. Slate is a timeless option, and in the black color, it goes with any decor theme. Typical of black slate, ours has a medium charcoal grey coloring that will darken if you seal it. Some owners rub linseed oil into it once or twice a year for a darker finish.

All our slates are cleft, meaning they are "sheared" rather than cut and polished like marble or granite facings kits. There is some texture to it that can be seen and felt with your fingertips. Nominal thickness of our slate is 1/2", and in accordance with the marble institute standards the thickness of slate can very from 3/8" to 1/2".

Tips on How To Clean Slate!

Remember that slate is a stone with a porous surface; liquids are easily absorbed. Water will normally make the stone appear darker, but after 15 to 20 minutes of drying time, the original color should come back, but wipe any excess to prevent rings or calcium staining. Mild soap and water (a few drops, only, of a clear-colored dish washing liquid) will clean most dirt and/or dust. Use a very diluted ammonia and water solution (1 : 20) on tough stains with a soft cloth or sponge. Do not use citrus-base products, vinegar or anything abrasive. You can apply a slate sealant (ask at your local hardware, home center, or stone fabrication shop.)
